PHNOM PENH, April 29 — According to the Ministry of National Defence, Thai military forces opened fire in five separate incidents, using M79 and M16 weapons with a total of nine rounds fired, during an observation mission by the Military Attachés Corps in Phnom Penh (MACPP) at the O’Smach International Border Checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province.

According to a press release issued by Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, the incident occurred between 10:35 a.m. and 11:09 a.m., while foreign military attachés and relevant officials were conducting an on-site inspection following the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

The ministry said Cambodia had formally notified the Thai side in advance through the Secretariat of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) before the second annual observation visit of 2026 took place. The participation of MACPP members, the ministry said, reflected strong international attention to peace and security along the border.

According to the Ministry of National Defence, H.E. Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, spokesperson for the ministry, said the incident was contrary to the spirit of the ceasefire and existing agreements reached by both sides to reduce tensions and promote peace, security and stability along the border.

According to the ministry, H.E. Lieutenant General Maly Socheata further stated that Cambodia remains committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes and continues to call for full respect for international law, the ASEAN Charter, and all existing treaties and agreements between the two countries to ensure long-term peace and stability.

The ministry reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to fully implement the Joint Statement of the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) of Dec. 27, 2025, the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand of Oct. 26, 2025, and other related agreements aimed at finding a peaceful, just and lasting solution.

Cambodian forces remain on close watch and maintain a high level of vigilance, the ministry said, while continuing to safeguard Cambodia’s territorial integrity and the safety of its people.

There was no immediate response from Thai authorities to Cambodia’s statement. Observers said the incident could raise fresh concerns over border stability, despite commitments by both sides to uphold the ceasefire and pursue peaceful dialogue.
